Choosing a counselor is hard, how do I know if a counselor is “right” for me.
Walking into a room and discussing the issues that are difficult or painful with a complete stranger is scary. There are many different websites that try to outline what makes a “good” counselor, some of them valid, some not. The most important factor, however, is your relationship with your counselor. After a few sessions, you should feel comfortable speaking honestly and authentically with me about some things, others may still take some time. You should trust that I will not judge or condemn you. You should feel safe. If you are not experiencing these feelings, please tell me, together we can evaluate what is missing and either create a better relationship, or find a different fit.

What will the first session be like?
Many people are nervous about the first session, this is perfectly normal. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early. You will be greeted by our staff and asked to complete some paperwork. When we sit down to talk I will invite you to talk about what brought you into counseling. At this time you are free to share as much or as little as you would like. If you have any questions or concerns please share them with me. During this time we will create a safe and intimate environment that encourages honest dialogue. At the end of our session together, we will create a plan for treatment that best fits your needs.

How long does therapy last?
This is a tricky question that often comes up in therapy. Understandably, the answer is not the same for each client. There are many different factors that determine the course of your counseling including; the reason you came to counseling, the degree to which it affects your life, and the effort you are able to put forth both in therapy and at home. I strive to create a relationship with my clients that is honest and trusting allowing for discussion at anytime on your progress.

What if I need to see someone right away?
At Charis we do our best to accommodate your schedule and usually will have an appointment available for you within a day or two. If you have an emergency please call 911 or the Crisis Hotline at

My boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband/significant other really needs counseling when can I get them in?
It can be extremely hard when we see a loved one struggling and are unsure of what to do. Unfortunately we have to wait until they reach the place where they are ready for counseling. We cannot trick, force or coerce them into counseling, we may get them in the door, but they will not be ready to do the work.

But its been so long, shouldn’t I be over it by now?
Often the feelings that are ignored immediately following a traumatic event come back into our lives in different ways. They can cause damage to ourselves, and those we love around us. Those feelings do not simply go away., When ignored or stifled, they simply manifest themselves into something else. There is no time limit on how long your experience could effect you, and unfortunately sometimes time is not all we need.

I heard you’re a Christian Counselor, I’m not a Christian, can I still come see you?
Of Course. I provide counseling and therapy from a Christian perspective with tremendous respect for all spiritual diversity and beliefs.
